It Gets Better

No video, no fanfare, and coming late to the party, but I just want to say... It does get better. Some of it never goes away, but with years it gets better.

With the years passing, finding one's place and people who are accepting becomes easier. There is a  thriving GLBT community to get involved in. There are people who accept and care for you and love you and that really changes things. It gets better when you can choose where to live, where to work, study, whom to associate with. Some people will not agree with your lifestyle but will love and accept you nevertheless.

How do I know it gets better? Because for me it has. From the constant bullying at my Catholic school, from my adoptive parents' rejection, from the crippling contempt of my church leaders I have risen.  I was physically beaten, spit on, called names on a daily basis. I got preached out in public, I was laughed at and treated as a criminal by my community. However, I'm no longer that abused and suicidal teen. I am now a gay man who enjoys his life, his family, who is proud of who he is. Life is not perfect, but much much better. Being powerless as a kid is awful. And it seems it takes forever. But it gets better.

Please. Don't give up.
